Tom checks into the hotel in town. He’s careful going there. Looks around. Doubles back. Circles the block to make sure no one’s following him. He can’t see anyone. He gets a room. Requests that it’s on the back of the building. The window leads out onto the fire escape. He leans his head out the window and looks down. The ladder at the bottom is drawn up. It can’t be reached from the ground.

Soon after, he gets a call. It’s Reiko. “I’ve been benched,” she says.

“Shit,” Tom says. “I’m sorry.”

“The asshole chief I was telling you about has come to town,” she says. “Obviously spies an opportunity for glory.” She tells him what else the chief said. How she could be a potential target. He’s benching her for her safety. It’s all very similar to what Tom himself has been told. “It’s a crock of shit.”

“Where are you now?”

“I’m at home.”

Tom tells her where he is. “Come here. Pack some things. We’ll lie low together. If you are a target, it’s safer you’re not at home.”

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

“Be careful. Make sure you’re not followed.”

“Got it.”

“Are you going to do what he asks?” Tom says before they hang up. “Are you going to stay on the bench?”

Reiko makes a noise. “Hell no,” she says.

Tom grins. “Good.”
